Eleven approaches, described rather than ranked. Each entry says what the approach involves, what conditions it depends on, and what it does not settle — because the choice between them is made from diagnostics performed on your building, and nothing on this page has seen your building.
You will not find a "best method" here, and you will not find prices. What you will find is enough understanding to follow the reasoning when a professional explains why they proposed one approach for your house rather than another, and enough to notice when no reasoning is offered at all.
Sub-slab depressurization
“The contractor said they would put a pipe through the basement floor.”
Reverses the pressure difference under the floor so gas leaves by pipe.
Drain-tile depressurization
“They mentioned connecting to the drain tile instead of cutting the floor.”
Draws from a pipe loop that already runs the perimeter.
Sump-based mitigation
“They want to seal the sump lid and run the pipe from there.”
Turns an entry path into the suction point.
Sub-membrane depressurization
“The crawl space has a dirt floor — what would they actually do?”
Creates a sealed surface to draw from where there is no slab.
Crawl-space membrane systems
“Is putting plastic down enough on its own?”
A membrane alone and a membrane with suction are different things.
Sealing as a supporting measure
“Someone suggested just sealing the cracks and seeing what happens.”
It helps a system work. It is not a system.
Ventilation approaches
“Could we just ventilate more instead of installing a system?”
Dilution rather than prevention, with running costs.
System fans
“What does the fan actually do, and where should it go?”
The component with a finite life, and the one with a placement rule.
Discharge locations
“Does it matter where the pipe comes out?”
Above the roofline, away from openings, for a reason.
Monitoring devices
“There is a little U-shaped tube on the pipe — what is it telling me?”
A gauge shows suction. It does not show the indoor level.
Post-installation testing
“Do we need to test again after it is installed?”
The only step that establishes the work achieved something.
