Sub-membrane depressurization

“The crawl space has a dirt floor — what would they actually do?”

Where there is no slab, a membrane is laid over the earth and sealed at seams, edges, and penetrations. The system then draws from beneath that membrane, in the same way it would from beneath a slab.

The membrane is doing structural work in the design, not just covering the ground. It has to hold a pressure difference.

Why this matters

Exposed earth is a continuous source area across the whole crawl-space floor, which is why a barrier is needed before anything can be drawn from.
Published guidance describes this as the approach for crawl spaces with exposed soil.

Access and headroom determine whether the work is straightforward or difficult, and that drives a large part of the variation in crawl-space quotes.
