Sub-membrane depressurization
“The crawl space has a dirt floor — what would they actually do?”
Where there is no slab, a membrane is laid over the earth and sealed at seams, edges, and penetrations. The system then draws from beneath that membrane, in the same way it would from beneath a slab.
The membrane is doing structural work in the design, not just covering the ground. It has to hold a pressure difference.

- Exposed earth is a continuous source area across the whole crawl-space floor, which is why a barrier is needed before anything can be drawn from.
- Published guidance describes this as the approach for crawl spaces with exposed soil.
