Sub-slab depressurization

The contractor said they would put a pipe through the basement floor.

A suction point is cut through the slab, connected to a pipe and a fan, and discharged above the roofline. The fan lowers the pressure in the material beneath the slab relative to the space above it.

The intent is not to filter air or to seal the building. It is to make the easiest route for soil gas a pipe rather than the floor.

Why this matters

  • It addresses the mechanism directly: soil gas moves because the building is slightly depressurised relative to the soil, and this reverses that relationship beneath the slab.
  • Published mitigation guidance describes it as the approach applicable to most slab and basement foundations.

  • How well it works depends on how far pressure extends through the material under the slab, which varies with what is down there.
