“What does the fan actually do, and where should it go?”
The fan creates the pressure difference the whole approach depends on. Everything downstream of it — the pipe between the fan and the discharge — is under positive pressure.
That single fact determines where it may be mounted: outside living space, so that a leak in the pressurised section discharges outdoors rather than into the house.
Why this matters
What it changes about the decision in front of you.
- Without the fan there is no depressurization; a passive stack relies on buoyancy alone and does considerably less.
- Fan location is a safety decision rather than a convenience one, for the pressure reason above.
What it could influence
Where the effect is likely to show, and in which direction where that is knowable.
- Fans have a finite service life and fail silently, which is why the gauge matters more than the sound.
- Sizing follows from the diagnostics: an underspecified fan will not extend pressure, an oversized one wastes energy and makes noise.
What this does not settle
What still stands. Noticing a problem is not the same as losing the evidence.
- A running fan does not establish that the system is reducing levels — the gauge and a measurement do.
- Selecting a fan does not establish any particular result.
