The three warranties, and what each covers

Almost every radon dispute we see described involves a homeowner who believed a warranty covered something it did not. There are three distinct instruments in this trade and they are routinely spoken about as one.

This page is what we teach homeowners to distinguish. Contractors who state all three clearly avoid the entire category of dispute.

Equipment warranty

Covers the fan and other manufactured components against defect, for a term set by the manufacturer rather than by you. It says nothing about whether the system design works.

Homeowners are told to ask who administers a claim — manufacturer, installer, or owner — and whether the labour to swap a unit is included, because that is frequently where the surprise lives.

Workmanship warranty

Covers your installation: joints, seals, mounting, penetrations, and make-good. Term and scope are yours to set, and stating them plainly is a differentiator because many quotes do not.

This is the warranty that matters when a riser separates or a seal fails, and it is the one homeowners most often assume exists without checking.

Outcome commitment

Not strictly a warranty: a contractual commitment that the post-mitigation measurement will fall below a stated level, with a defined remedy if it does not.

Homeowners are taught that this is the term that determines who pays when verification fails, and that a five-year fan warranty is not a substitute for it. Contractors who offer an outcome commitment should say so prominently — it is the strongest differentiator available and it is invisible if buried.

What homeowners are told to get in writing

Which of the three you are offering, the term of each, who administers a claim, whether labour is included, whether it transfers on sale, and what voids it.

That last one matters more than it sounds: a homeowner who finishes a basement over your system without telling you should know in advance whether that affects their coverage.

  • Equipment: what component, what term, who claims, labour included or not.
  • Workmanship: what work, what term, what response time you commit to.
  • Outcome: what level, what remedy, how many visits, over what period.
  • Transferability on sale, stated explicitly.
  • What voids each — modification, renovation, third-party service.

Warranty matrix: contractor questions

Do we have to offer an outcome commitment?

No, and plenty of good contractors do not. What the platform teaches homeowners is to know which they are buying. A clear "installation warranty, no outcome commitment" is defensible; an ambiguous document is not.

Should warranties be transferable?

That is your commercial decision. Homeowners are told a transferable warranty is a genuine asset at resale, so if yours transfers it is worth stating rather than leaving to be discovered.

What if a homeowner modifies the system?

State it in the voiding conditions. Basement finishing after installation is common enough that leaving it unaddressed guarantees an argument eventually.

Does the platform warrant our work?

No, and every homeowner-facing page says so. The contractor designs, installs, and warrants the system, and the homeowner’s contract is with you. We introduce; we do not stand behind the work.

State requirements

Credentialing and disclosure rules differ by state, and each state page states the credential we verify before routing anything to you.

Three instruments, stated separately, in writing. That single practice removes most of the warranty disputes described anywhere on this platform.
