You have a sump pit

There is a sump pit in the basement, with or without a pump.

A sump pit is an opening into the aggregate and soil beneath the slab. Uncovered, it is a direct path for soil gas into the basement.

The same feature is frequently an advantage in a design: a sealed pit can serve as an effective suction point, because it already connects to the material a system needs to draw from.
