The basement is finished

We finished the basement and now the kids use it every day.

Finishing a basement changes two things at once. Occupancy rises, so time spent on the level closest to the soil increases; and access falls, because the joint, the slab, and the walls are now behind finishes.

That combination is why measuring before finishing is worth far more than measuring after, and why a lot of households find out in the wrong order.

  • The lowest level typically reads highest, so occupancy there matters more than occupancy upstairs.
  • Suction points, sealing, and routing all become more disruptive once there is drywall, flooring, and joinery in the way.

  • Routing may have to take a longer or less direct path to avoid finished areas, which affects both appearance and cost.
