Minnesota licenses radon measurement and mitigation professionals through the Minnesota Department of Health. This is a genuine state licence rather than a voluntary credential, and it is what should be verified before hiring. Measurement and mitigation are licensed separately.
What to verify before you hire
- Ask for the MDH licence number as it appears on the contract.
- Confirm it is current and covers mitigation, not measurement alone.
- Confirm whoever performs the verification test holds a measurement licence.
- Ask that the verification test be named inside the written scope.
Disclosure and transactions
The Minnesota Radon Awareness Act requires sellers of residential property to disclose known radon information and to provide the state’s radon publication to buyers before a purchase agreement is signed. It does not require testing or mitigation — the response to an elevated result is negotiated, and a written quote from a licensed contractor is what makes that negotiation concrete.
Testing resources
Start with a short-term test on the lowest lived-in level under closed-building conditions. Minnesota houses spend a long stretch of the year closed and heated, which makes heating-season results the more informative planning number. MDH publishes testing guidance and licensed professional listings.
