Why contractor experience matters in radon mitigation

The materials in a radon system cost very little and the installation is not physically difficult. What you are actually paying for is a set of judgments — where to draw suction, how much the sub-slab will take, what to seal, where the pipe can go — and those judgments are what experience produces.

Here is where it shows up, and how to test for it without being an expert yourself.

Reading the sub-slab correctly

The central question in every job is whether one suction point covers the floor. An experienced contractor runs a pressure-field diagnostic and interprets what it shows: influence reaching the far wall, or falling off past a footing; a gravel bed that carries suction easily, or native soil that barely moves.

The failure mode of inexperience is not incompetence — it is defaulting. One point, in the sump, because that is what most houses take. On most houses that is right. On yours it might not be, and nobody finds out until the verification test.

Difficult foundations

Hollow block walls carry soil gas up the cavity and can bypass a sub-slab system entirely. Stone and rubble foundations leak along their height. Crawlspaces need a sealed membrane rather than a cored slab. Structural floors over voids need the void depressurized. Multi-level foundations on hillsides have separate soil-contact zones that may or may not communicate.

Each of those is routine for a contractor who sees them weekly and genuinely unfamiliar to one who does not. Ask directly how many houses like yours they have done.

Routing judgment you have to live with

Where the pipe goes is permanent, and it is decided in a few minutes on installation morning. Experienced installers think about the room you might finish, the elevation you look at every day, the window your neighbor opens, and how the fan will be reached for replacement in eight years.

That foresight costs nothing on the day and a great deal to retrofit. It is one of the clearest markers of someone who has been called back to fix their own past decisions.

How to test for it in one conversation

You do not need technical knowledge to evaluate this. Ask three questions and listen for specificity rather than confidence.

  • "What did the pressure-field test show under my slab?" — a specific answer means they tested.
  • "How many houses with this foundation type have you done?" — the number and the fluency both matter.
  • "What would you do if the post-mitigation test came back high?" — an experienced contractor names the remedy without hesitating.

Why experience matters: common questions

Does years in business equal experience with my foundation?

Not necessarily. A firm with two decades in a market of poured suburban basements may have limited experience with a stone cellar or a crawlspace membrane. Ask about your specific foundation type rather than about tenure — the relevant experience is with houses like yours, not with houses generally.

Is a newer contractor automatically riskier?

No, particularly where the individual came from an established firm or holds current certification with continuing education. What matters is whether they run a diagnostic, produce a specific written scope, and price the verification test. A newer contractor who does all three is a better bet than a long-established one who does none.

How much does experience affect the price?

Less than you might expect, and sometimes in the opposite direction — an experienced contractor who recognizes your house as an easy single-point job may quote lower than someone padding for uncertainty. Where experience reliably shows up is in the correctness of the design, which is what determines whether the money accomplished anything.
