NRPP certification, explained for homeowners

NRPP stands for the National Radon Proficiency Program, one of the two national certification bodies for radon professionals in the United States. In states that do not license radon work themselves, an NRPP certification is usually the meaningful credential a homeowner can check.

It is not a trade association membership and not a marketing badge. It is a certification with categories, examinations, continuing education, and an expiry date.

What the certification actually covers

NRPP certifies individuals and organizations in distinct categories, and the distinction matters enormously to a homeowner. Measurement certification covers testing. Mitigation certification covers designing and installing systems. Laboratory and analytical certifications cover the labs that read detectors.

A firm may legitimately hold one and not another. When you are hiring someone to install a system, the credential to verify is the mitigation one — a measurement certification is not a substitute, and confusing the two is a common way homeowners end up with an unqualified installer.

How it is earned and kept

Certification generally involves meeting entry requirements, passing an examination in the relevant category, and then maintaining the credential through continuing education and periodic renewal. It expires; it is not a one-time achievement.

That expiry is why "certified" on a website is worth less than a current certification number you can check. Certifications lapse, businesses change hands, and the person who held the credential may no longer work there.

How it relates to state requirements

Some states license radon professionals directly and set their own requirements. Others do not license at all and direct homeowners toward nationally certified professionals. A number of states recognize national certification as part of their own licensure path.

In practical terms: check whether your state licenses radon work. If it does, that license is the credential to verify. If it does not, a current national certification is what you have — and it is a substantive one.

How to verify it

Ask for the certification number and the exact name it is held under, which may be an individual rather than the company. Then check it against the certifying body's own listing rather than accepting a screenshot or a logo.

While you are asking, confirm the category covers mitigation, confirm the expiry date, and confirm the person named will be the one designing your system rather than a credential held elsewhere in the company.

NRPP certification: common questions

Is NRPP better than NRSB?

Neither is inherently superior — they are two independent national certification bodies covering the same trade, and many states and homeowners treat them as equivalent. What matters is that the certification is current, that it covers the right category, and that you have verified it rather than assumed it.

My state licenses radon contractors. Does NRPP still matter?

The state license is the credential that governs whether the work may legally be performed for compensation, so that is the one to verify first. A national certification alongside it is additional evidence of training and continuing education, and some state licensure paths incorporate it. It is a supplement, not a replacement.

Can a certified measurement professional install my system?

Not on the strength of a measurement certification. Measurement and mitigation are separate categories testing different competencies, and in licensed states they are separate licenses as well. Ask specifically which category the credential covers before hiring anyone to install anything.
