Licensing and credentials

Ohio licenses radon testers, radon mitigation contractors, and radon laboratories through the Ohio Department of Health. This is a genuine state licence rather than a voluntary credential — anyone performing radon mitigation for compensation in Ohio must hold it. Testing and mitigation are licensed separately.

What to verify before you hire

• Ask for the ODH licence number as it appears on the contract.
• Confirm it is current and covers mitigation rather than testing alone.
• Confirm the laboratory analysing any passive device is itself licensed.
• Ask that the verification test be named inside the written scope.

Disclosure and transactions

Ohio’s Residential Property Disclosure Form asks sellers about known radon testing and results, so radon is an explicit disclosure item in Ohio sales. Nothing in Ohio law requires a seller to test or to mitigate — the response to an elevated result is negotiated like any other inspection finding.

Testing resources

Start with a short-term test on the lowest lived-in level under closed-building conditions. ODH publishes testing guidance and maintains listings of licensed testers, mitigation contractors, and laboratories.
